Case Of The Month

Taz, a 2-year-old red male Pomeranian presented in February 2011. Taz was not feeling well. He had a decreased appetite and he was vomiting. Lab tests were performed and his kidney values were elevated. Because of his age we discussed possible congenital abnormalities (birth defects) as one of the possible causes of his symptoms. Imaging tests included ultrasound, which revealed an abnormal looking kidney. Taz was hospitalized and treated for his kidney disease. He was stabilized and discharged.

Bellerose has always been proactive concerning its patient care. As Taz grew it was apparent that his prognosis was poor…due to his kidney disease. We contacted our colleagues and consultants at the Animal Medical Center (AMC) and discussed the possibility of Taz becoming a recipient of stem cells as a way of treating his congenitally damaged kidney. At the time the AMC was admitting older patients suffering from kidney failure for their Stem Cell Program. However, after one on one discussion and multiple round table discussions our team (Bellerose and AMC) decided to have Taz admitted for treatment.

Taz was admitted via the Internal Medicine Department to the Interventional Radiology Department at the AMC as a prospective stem cell patient. Thank you to our AMC team: Elizabeth Appleman, DVM, ACVIM, Pamela Schwartz, DVM, ACVS, Allyson Berent, DVM, ACVM, and Chick Weisse, DVM, ACVS

Taz was taken to surgery where his left kidney was removed, as it was not functional. There was no normal tissue present in his left kidney.

Masses were found on the right kidney and a cystic mass was found in close association with his right kidney. The mass was removed and was found to be benign. At this time some of Taz’s abdominal fat was collected and harvested for stem cell production.

9/26/2011 UPDATE

Taz’s stem cells were delivered to  his right kidney via an interventional approach (a catheter placed in his right femoral artery, groin and fed to his right renal artery. Taz recovered well and went home. We continued to monitor his kidney function at Bellerose and he returned for a second stem cell injection in September 2011.

September 2012 UPDATE

Since his Stem Cell treatment Taz has not looked back. He has gained weight and his kidney values remain normal! There has been consistent communication between staffs at Bellerose and AMC.  Post treatment tests are regularly scheduled at Bellerose. We at Bellerose are proud to have been part of the innovative care that saved Taz’s life. We look forward to a bright future for Taz---caring for him and wishing him good luck and good health.

I love this place. Both of my dogs go here. The staff is always very nice! The doctors are amazing and take the time to explain everything to you about your pet.

The staff at Bellerose has treated our family’s pets continuously since 1963. I cannot say enough about the excellent care that our pets have received from their professional, caring staff. They have treated 2 dogs and 7 cats during the last 49 years for everything.

COMPASSIONATE STAFF.I was fairly charged for all the loving care. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

friendly atmosphere, easy to get to location and a great staff—been going here for years and highly recommend it! The best decision I ever made! Unquestionably one of the best veterinary practices in the world! All of the vets here are fantastic.

Loretta was a very special dog who had a good life with us and we had a good life too. My husband and I believe that your hospital and caring staff made her quality of life exceptional. Thank you all.

I would also like to take this opportunity to tell all of you how grateful I am for your many years of dedicated medical care to my beloved Spunky. It’s been 16 years, 5 months, and 7 days of wonderful service and loving concern and I will always love you for it!

Many, many thanks,

I wanted to thank you for everything that you did for my “baby”. You are such a great vet and I will be forever grateful for everything you do for me and MJ.

We loved Missie very much as she loved us for ten years. She was a member of our family. We needed the little time left to us to talk to her, pet her, comfort her and express our love for her.

We would like to take the opportunity to say how we are pleased at the service Sammy receives at your facility. Especially for Dr Mariliz Hernandez, she is a great asset to your hospital. We appreciate the care and understanding Dr Hernandez shows Sammy at the time of his exam.

Because of people like you...thank you for all you do. Without the entire Staff, I would not have had Barney for as long as I did. You gave him all of your experience and love, everytime he needed you all.
I cannot express my thank you’s enough
